Darlington Station transformed
The building work most passengers remember from 2025 was part of a longer programme. The enlarged station opened on 17 May 2026, giving Darlington a new eastern entrance while retaining the Victorian station at its heart.

Why it is often called the “2025 station project”
Early plans aimed to align the opening with the 2025 bicentenary of the Stockton & Darlington Railway. Major track, platform and bridge work did take place that year, but the completed passenger facilities opened in May 2026. This page records both dates rather than quietly folding them into one.

A fully accessible enclosed bridge joins the new eastern concourse to the historic station.
East-side parking spaces
The Neasham Road multi-storey includes accessible bays and electric-vehicle charging points.

From demolition to opening
The transformation, year by year
Demolition and remediation progressed on the eastern side.
Demolition was complete, clearing the site for the new gateway.
More than 1,100 tonnes of steel had risen for the entrance hall and car park.
The concourse building was handed to Network Rail for railway fit-out.
The major footbridge sections were lifted into place, linking old and new.
Platforms 5 and 6, the eastern concourse and linked facilities opened to passengers.
Subject to approvals, phased highway and public-realm works continue around Neasham Road and Victoria Road.
What comes next
The station is open; work around it continues
Tees Valley Combined Authority says the station building is complete, while highway and public-realm improvements on the Neasham Road and Victoria Road sides are planned in phases. The current programme points to completion in spring 2027, subject to approvals and notice periods.
